Palm Oil: The Red Botanical Oil Behind the Soap

Palm oil is one of the world's most widely used vegetable oils—and one of the most misunderstood.

In cosmetics, its role is primarily functional. It can contribute fatty material to soap formulations and help determine the hardness, cleansing character and overall structure of a finished bar.

INCI Name

Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil

Palm oil is obtained from the fruit of the African oil palm, Elaeis guineensis.

It should not be confused with palm kernel oil, which comes from the seed inside the fruit.

Origin

The African oil palm is native to West and Central Africa and is now cultivated extensively throughout tropical regions.

Palm oil is extracted from the fleshy part of the fruit, while palm kernel oil is extracted from the kernel.

The distinction matters because the two oils have substantially different compositions and behave differently in formulations. Cosmetic Ingredient Review separately recognises palm oil and palm kernel oil as distinct cosmetic ingredients.

Key Benefits

Palm oil is primarily valued as a functional formulation oil.

• Contributes structure to soap

Palm oil can contribute to the firmness and physical structure of a soap bar.

• Supports cleansing formulations

Once saponified, palm oil contributes fatty-acid salts that form part of the cleansing system.

• Helps balance other oils

Palm oil can be combined with oils having different characteristics to create a more balanced soap formula.

• Plant-derived

It is a vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the oil palm.

Its value in soap is therefore less about applying raw palm oil directly to the skin and more about what it contributes after formulation and saponification.

How It's Used

Palm oil is used in soap, cleansing products and other cosmetic formulations.

In traditional and modern soap-making, it is combined with an alkaline material so that saponification converts its triglycerides into soap.

Palm oil should not be treated as interchangeable with palm kernel oil. Although both originate from the same plant, they come from different parts of the fruit and have different fatty-acid profiles.

Cautions

• Sustainable sourcing matters. Palm oil production can have significant environmental and social impacts depending on how and where it is produced.

• Palm oil and palm kernel oil are different ingredients.

• Raw palm oil is not the same as finished soap. Saponification changes the original oils into soap.

• Use cosmetic-grade material from a reputable supplier.

The Bareglow Edit

Palm oil is a good reminder that an ingredient's value cannot always be judged by what it does when used alone.

In soap, its real contribution emerges through formulation.

A botanical oil transformed by chemistry. Functional by nature. Thoughtfully used.
